The names for some of the items on a yacht may sound alien to most people, different areas use different names / terms, here are some basic terms you can use for the Star yachts;
Forward. Pointing to the front of the yacht.
Aft. Pointing to the rear of the yacht.
Hull. The main body of the yacht.
Bow. The pointed front of the yacht.
Stern. The rear of the hull / deck, can be round or square in shape.
Beam. The width at the widest part of the hull.
Mainsail. The larger of the sails.
Jib / Fore Sail. A smaller sail in front of the mast, there can be one or two of these.
Jib / Fore Boom. A spar found below the jib sail which is connected to a bowsprit or deck screw eye.
Top Sail. If fitted, between the gaff spar and the mast.
Mast. The wooden upright that holds up the mainsail.
Boom. The spar that is fixed to the base of the mast pointing aft.
Gaff. The angled top spar found on the larger yachts pointing aft.
Bowsprit. A spar that sticks out forward from the bow to hold the jib sail.
Bowsprit Shoe. A bracket that fixes the rear of the bowsprit in place on the deck.
Bowsprit Strap. A strap at the point of the bow that holds the bowsprit.
Mast Mount. The bracket that holds the mast in place, either flat plate or tubular design.
Bowsprit Mount. The bracket that holds the bowsprit in place, flat plate design.
Mount Pin. The pin through the mount bracket to hold the mast or bowsprit in place.
Sheet Horse. A transverse rail that sails attach to providing adjustment for the sails.
Bowsie. The adjuster found on the rigging cords.
Ferrule. The brass or plastic cup at the end of the mast / spars.
Gooseneck. The connector between the mast and boom.
Stay / Sheet. Another term for rigging cord.
Fore Stay. A rigging cord connecting the top of the mast to the bow area.
Rear / Back Stay. A rigging cord connecting the top of the mast to the stern area.
Jib Stay. A rigging cord connecting the top of the jib sail to the bow area.
Shrouds. The mast side tensioner cords.
Mast Rings. The brass rings that fix the mainsail to the mast.
Boom Rings. The brass rings that fix the mainsail to the boom.
Sheet Horse Rings. The brass rings that connect the sail to the sheet horse.
Screw Eye. The brass eye fittings found on the deck, mast and spars.
Deck Staple. A metal "U" shaped fitting on the deck for rigging points.
Sail Eyelet. The brass rings inserted into the sails to allow rigging cord through.
Keel. The downward fin under the hull to help stability.
Rudder. The brass plate item found at the stern some yachts for steering.
